MASTERCLASS 2019

The NIFF has also scheduled a series of three masterclasses on production, editing and branding, which will be taught, respectively, by Mintxo Díaz, Pablo Blanco and Lia Chapman.

The three sessions will take place on Friday, August 30th, at the Palacio del Condestable in Pamplona. The production masterclass will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.; the editing masterclass will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and the branding masterclass will take place between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Those interested in participating can register for free by filling out and sending the form, which can be downloaded from the festival website: www.navarrafestival.com, to info@navarrafestival.com. Places are limited and will be awarded in strict order of registration. Registration will remain open until capacity is reached.

INTRODUCTION TO AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION

This session, taught by producer Mintxo Díaz, is aimed at students or professionals at the beginning of their careers who are interested in film production.

In the workshop, we will explain the stages involved in developing a project from its inception and some of the keys that will help you bring it to fruition.

MINTXO DÍAZ

He worked as an Industrial Engineer for 11 years, developing technical and project management skills. For 7 years, he combined this with film production, creating his own production company in 2011, Dynamite Films. In 2016, he left engineering to dedicate himself exclusively to his passion for cinema. He has participated in workshops such as Berlinale Talents, IDFA Academy, and Torino Feature Lab. Among the projects he has produced are the feature films "The Maus," "Letters to Paul Morrissey," "Basque Selfie," "Las ninfas del celuloide," and "Shooting for Mirza," and short films such as "Safari," "The Acrobat," and "Picnic." Several of them are international co-productions. His projects have received more than 150 awards and many more selections in prestigious festivals, including: Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival, Goya Awards, San Sebastian Film Festival, BAFICI, PÖFF – Tallinn Black Nights, Karlovy Vary IFF, Fantastic Fest in Austin, Tribeca IFF, FIDLAB Marseille, Malaga Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, Seville European Film Festival... He is also a partner of Melitón Studios.

Pablo Blanco will teach this masterclass aimed at students with prior experience in audiovisual studies, either at the end of or during their training at film schools or audiovisual communication faculties, and industry professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of film editing.

PABLO BLANCO

As a film editor, he has worked on more than 60 films and has been nominated for the Goya Awards seven times. He won three of them, for "Airbag," "No habrá paz para los malvados," and "Las brujas de Zugarramurdi." In 1998, he founded the post-production company Atalanta. For television, he has edited episodes of "Criminal" and "Alatriste," among others. He has produced feature films such as "Flores de luna," directed by Juan Vicente Córdoba, and "El abrazo de los peces" by Chema Rodríguez, both of which participated in the San Sebastián International Film Festival. In 2010, he directed his first independent project, "Alegría," a documentary short. In 2011, he produced the short film "Una caja de botones," which won a Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film. In 2018, he wrote "Jhony," a film script with Carmen Boza and Jorge Luque. In 2019, he directed the short film "Intolerance." Among his most recent works is the feature film "Born King," directed by Agustí Villaronga. He is a founding partner of Microteatro and Estudios Melitón.

LIA CHAPMAN

Lia Chapman was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York. She currently resides between Madrid, Los Angeles, and the Dominican Republic. She holds a degree in Sociology from Fordham University in New York and a distinguished degree in directing from UCLA. After more than two decades working as an actress in film, theater, and television, she made her directorial debut in 2014 with the award-winning short film, Broken Angels. She subsequently directed "In My Mother's Arms" (2017). This short film participated in more than 40 festivals and received eight awards, including Best Fiction Short Film in the "Caribbean" category at the International Solidarity and Awareness Short Film Showcase in February 2018. She is currently working on the project, Things We did For Freedom, where, in addition to doing service with her Dominican production company, Mis 3 Hermanas, she also works as an actress. In 2020, she hopes to direct her first feature film, Because I Love You, in the Dominican Republic.
