LOS HIJOS DE LUCÍA
Spain, Germay, 2018
Documentary. 75’
It's 2016 and the narrator is traveling to Pedernales (Dominican Republic), the last Dominican town before crossing the border into Haiti. Her cousin Lucía arrived here in 2010, following her dream. But we soon discover that the border Lucía crossed wasn't physical but human, one where empathy and determination were the passport that allowed one to cross to the other side. Lucía had found some Haitian children living poorly on the streets of Pedernales and, shocked by their situation, decided to do everything possible to get them off the streets and give them a safe roof over their heads. So Lucia decided to rent an unfinished building in the Haitian village of Anse-a-Pitre. The street children then decided to follow her home, and before long, Lucía and Alexis had 10 street children living with them. That's just the beginning of a fascinating story. In the central plaza of Pedernales, the narrator meets Nelson Sena, the first child to arrive at Lucía's foster home. Nelson recalls those days and reveals his current situation, which helps us understand the challenges facing youth in this part of the island. The three trips the narrator/director makes to Haiti to visit his cousin Lucía coincide with key moments in the orphanage's history. The visits become visual testaments to a grand emotional odyssey in which the most essential humanity is rediscovered.

LEO A LA VIDA
Spain, 2018
Documentary. 70’
A group of people attend the screening of an interview with Leonela Relys, a humble Cuban teacher who created a simple literacy method, Yes, I Can, which has helped more than 12 million people become literate in just over a decade. This innovative teaching method, awarded by UNESCO, has represented a new hope in the fight for a literate and cultured world. Leonela's words, along with the participation of other figures, are the common thread throughout this document, which delves into the problem of illiteracy. Testimony by testimony, we uncover the roots of all the inequalities, discrimination, and injustices plaguing the world. Because illiteracy is not limited solely to not knowing how to read and write, nor is it a problem of so-called Third World countries: illiteracy, in some of its forms, accompanies every person, every community, and if we are not able to identify and eradicate it, we will contribute to the perpetuation of poverty and the exclusion of a significant portion of global society. Leo a la vida is more than a documentary; it is a guide that challenges us and invites us to analyze to what extent we are free from illiteracy, especially from political illiteracy. On life's journey, it is like holding a humble oil lamp in one's hand in the midst of the most solemn darkness.

“You have a path marked out for you with everything you do, because there are rules: this is right and this is wrong, and you will be judged. That's the power of realizing that each person is so different, so different, that you can't box yourself in. Into anything. We are so much more than that.” With this premise, the documentary unfolds through the life of Alba, a twenty-year-old girl who has lived against social structures since coming of age. Her story is told through conversations with her family, spontaneous dialogues between her and the director, and the struggles of her daily life.
